The short answer
Hail and high winds can bruise shingles, knock off granules and lift edges, and the damage is not always visible from the ground. After a storm moves through Rochester or Southeast Minnesota, stay off the roof, photograph what you can see from the ground, and ask a local partner roofer to check and document it.

What does storm damage look like?
From the ground, look for dented gutters, downspouts, vents and window wraps, shingles that are missing or lifted, and granules collecting at the bottom of downspouts. Inside, check ceilings and the attic for new stains or drips.
Hail damage on shingles can show up as dark, bruised spots or small cracks. Wind damage often shows as creased, lifted or missing shingles along edges and ridges.

What should you do right after a storm?
- Stay off the roof. Wet and damaged shingles are slippery.
- Take dated photos of everything you can see from the ground.
- If water is coming in, move belongings and ask a partner roofer about a temporary cover.
- Request an inspection before any permanent repair.
- Contact your insurance company if the damage looks real, and ask what they need.
How can a partner roofer help?
A partner roofer can inspect the roof, chalk and photograph damage, and explain what repair or replacement would involve. Those notes can help when you speak with your insurance company, which makes its own decision about coverage.
What about door-to-door storm chasers?
