The short answer
Gutters carry water away from your roof edge and foundation. When they are clogged, sagging or packed with ice, water can back up under the shingles or spill against the house, so they are worth checking whenever your roof is looked at. In Rochester winters, clear gutters also help reduce ice trouble at the eaves.

Why do gutters matter for your roof?
Gutters collect runoff at the roof edge and send it down and away from the foundation. If they overflow or pull loose, water can soak the fascia, stain siding, pool near the foundation and, in winter, feed ice at the eaves.

What are the signs your gutters need attention?
- Water spilling over the edge during rain instead of flowing to the downspout.
- Sagging sections, or gutters pulling away from the fascia.
- Stains or peeling paint on the fascia and siding below the gutter.
- Plants or seedlings growing in the gutter.
- Large icicles or ice packed along the gutter in winter.
What can a partner roofer do?
A partner roofer can inspect gutters along with the roof edge, repair or reattach sections, advise on downspout placement and extensions, and quote replacement or guards where they make sense. Ask what is included and how water will be directed away from the house.
What about cleaning and safety?
Keep leaves and debris from building up, especially in fall. If you clean gutters yourself, use a stable ladder on level ground, and do not work near power lines or on ice. Or ask a partner roofer about it.
